Dairy-Free Smoked Mackerel Pate with Sweet Potato

This one was a winner from the first bite! I was visiting some friends in Southern France where seafood is abundant... but there was exactly ZERO dairy-free fish pate that we could buy for our picnic. Plus, store-bought pates are always full of crap like sugar and multi-syllabic artificial ingredients. So we came up with this 4-ingredient smoked mackerel pate which is dairy free, sugar free and oil free with no added salt – and it's delicious!

Actually, in France I used olive oil in the recipe but then yesterday I found some coconut yogurt in the fridge and thought, voila! That'll add some creaminess and lower the oil content at the same time. Not that olive oil (when organic, extra virgin and cold pressed) is bad for you – in fact, it's great for you – but too much fat consumption, as I learned recently, can feed pathogens. I'm pretty sure I'm getting my healthy fat intake in my other dishes throughout the day so why not try to cut it out in the fish dip? And it doesn't taste like there's a compromise in flavour at all.

All you need is a good food processor! I would recommend skinning the mackerel if possible, and if you need to use canned mackerel, it works too but fresh is always best and sustainably sourced, please!

This fish pate can work wonderfully with grain-free tortilla chips or psyllium husk bread as a spread... or with crudités, lettuce or artichoke as a dip!
